Terminology

Many patents use specialized technical language that could be translated in multiple ways into the target language. Nothing is more frustrating for a patent attorney than encountering different words describing the same concept. Proper terminology management ensures that terminology will be consistently maintained throughout the patent.

For example:
"wherein" translates to:
"caracterizado porque" in independent claims for Mexico
"caracterizado además porque" in dependent claims for Mexico
"en donde" for both dependent and independent claims for Chile and Argentina

To ensure the most accurate terminology is used, MultiLing:

  • Coordinates the development of glossaries and dictionaries
  • Researches and develops Terminology Databases
  • Edits, reviews, and updates terminology on a consistent basis
  • Integrates terminology databases into our translation memory software
  • Develops and uses style guides
  • Makes available all information to every linguist involved in the project
  • Consistently trains users in the creation and maintenance of electronic glossaries

For more information on terminology management, MultiLing's Vice President of Operations, Amanda Montecinos published an article in The Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators regarding this topic.
